A Pretty Darn Good Movie, All Things Considered

After Chi Alpha tonight, Jill and I (Jill, by the way, is my beautiful wife) are probably going to watch The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

The Two Towers is the best Lord of the Rings movie and anyone who disagrees is a moron (heh heh).

All three films are superb, though. It's rare to find a trilogy in which one or two films don't substantially rise above the others (Empire, Godfather, Back to the Future, Violent Person).

But despite the parity within the LOTR trilogy, I do, in fact, prefer The Two Towers. Such preference is probably lingering afterglow from my first viewing of the film.

Not since the first time I saw Star Wars did I have so many "chill" moments--involuntary shudders or goose-bumps, physical manifestations of something that resonates within. In other words, something that makes you want to say "Boy, that was cool."

Perhaps it was excessive air conditioning in the theater or too glutinous an intake of Coke, but such moments abounded--with varying degrees of intensity, of course. Gandalf performing the exorcism, Theoden putting on his armor, and the Ents marching off to war were all of the, "boy, that was cool" variety.

Side note: Ents are stupid-looking giant trees that talk. If Peter Jackson could make the Ents marching to war meaningful and powerful, why couldn't George Lucas have done the same with the Gungans? (Hint: Because George is an idiot) -I cite my brother Andrew as the source for this note.

Other moments--the elves arriving at Helm's Deep, Theoden deciding to ride out and meet the enemy, and, of course, Gandalf arriving at first light to save the day--had an uncommonly high chill factor.

So Two Towers is best. That's my subjective argument, and I'm sticking with it.

Also, Troy stinks. Don't ever see that crummy movie.

the Two Towers is probably my favorite of the trilogy but it is in a very close race with The Fellowship. I just have to appreciate it a lot more now that I've seen the whole trilogy.

Whoa. We ALL watched Two Towers this weekend. Was it some kind of Jacksonian mind-wave thing?

Oh, except the mom. She went to bed as the showing began at midnight. Doogie showed the Theatrical cut, which is, at least shorter, and also flows much better. (He watched all three, by the way. In the morning, he laughed at EVERYTHING I said. A rare pleasure.)

Curious: Which Back to the Future did you think was best? I know the original stands alone, but I love the Temporal Dynamics of Part II. Deliciously twisted.

PS. Mom helped with this post.
PSS. Shelby spelled "Tootles" wrong.

The first Back to the Future is far superior to the others. The script is tighter, the humor naturally flows from the story, and it maintains a certain measure of believability despite unbelievable circumstances.

Back to the Future II is fun, but the fun is more self-aware than in the first. In other words, it's not as seemingly effortless.

See "Raiders" vs. "Last Crusade"

P.S. Is it "PSS" or "PPS" as in "post post-script"?

I must disagree, Reinman. I myself think that Return of the King is the best. But, then again, I do like the extended of TTT better than ROTK. Dang, they're all good. You win.

I love how you threw the "Violent Person" trilogy in there.

No way! The best version of the movies is from the 70's. I like that one!

Okay, I love them all, if you see that room, I have the same amount of action figures from each one. I think I like Two Towers the best. I think it's all together the best one. I like how it feels a lot like a story in Fellowship, I don't know, it just seems more that way. It's funny, I like the extended Two Towers least of all, it isn't as good as the other two extenededs. Sure, it has some cool, like, knowledge things, if that makes sense to anyone. I don't know, don't ask me, I'm just a girl.

tootles! :)

-TLOTR stands alone and is supernatually directed. But then I`m starting to see that God has his hand in a whole lot of movies. David Guyor said God used the king of babylon to speak to apostate Israel now He`s using hollyood to speak to america. Even George. Maybe George didn`t care if teens and adults like the last-first starwars trilogy. Maybe he wants to promote his worldview( don`t love anyone or you`ll be afaid and all fear is of the dark side, only siths speak in absolutes, etc). Maybe he wanted to appeal to preteens. My preteens love it peeyousa and all.--phil thooft
