The Big One
As promised, here is the last flag football post ever.
We played the championship game today. The first half was a defensive battle, with us leading 13 to 12 at the break. After a bit of a shootout throughout the second half, we found ourselves down by six with two minutes left, needing to drive the length of the field for the win (I played wide receiver for the series).
After a couple short completions, we were facing fourth and five. Seeing that their safety had come up to play for the run, I whispered to our quarterback to pump-fake me short and then throw deep--wanting to end the game on one play.
Though it was a gamble, I thought we had a good chance of pulling it off.
The ball was snapped, and I ran forward, faked the short route, and burned down field. I turned to find the ball, and to my horror, I saw the quarterback throw it to where I would have been on the short route--where it was picked off by my guy.
I guess there was a miscommunication.
So all they had to do was run out the clock. Except there was a flag on the play.
The refs called roughing the quarterback on the defense, which meant that we got ten yards, and more importantly, a new set of downs.
With about fifty seconds left, we started our drive again. The first pass was incomplete. On the second play, I knew I could beat my guy, so I ran deep again. After a little move, I saw I had him beat down the sideline.
The quarterback saw that and threw the ball deep. I turned and saw it coming, but it started drifting back towards the middle of the field--right where their safety was waiting. He easily intercepted it, and then his team ran out the clock. End of game.
Dang.
Boy, I almost got you to care about flag football, didn't I?
Yeah right. Just like George Lucas almost got me to care about his prequels.

Man, I know those plays... I mean I KNOW those plays... Ah sweet reminiscence. We're gonna have to play over Thanksgiving or somethin'.
